ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Lou Ann Wieand, Ph.D., is an Emeritus Professor of Psychology at Humboldt State University . She has taught and supervised M.A. student trainees in their Marriage Family Therapy program for 26 years. She has also taught in doctoral psychology programs in San Francisco , and undergraduate psychology students as a Fulbright scholar in Macau , China . She is a Licensed Psychologist in private practice, currently in Arcata, specializing in couples therapy, sexuality, and gender identity issues. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

This workshop presents historical views of psychotherapy's treatment of sexuality and updates additional information on the roles of brain and hormones in understanding our clients' sexual issues. Asserting that gender differences begin in the brain, we will strategize about effective and egalitarian approaches to addressing sexuality with individuals and couples with mixed and same gender partners. We will also examine the newest information on gender dysphoria and standards of care surrounding clients presenting with these symptoms. We will attempt to define what it means to be sex-positive therapists, and how to incorporate gender differences in sexuality into our intake, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning. Finally, we will explore the sexual transferences and countertransferences that take place in a therapy practice that is honest about sexuality.

COURSE CONTENT:

Physiology of sex, gender differences in sexuality from birth through adolescence, from adulthood to old age. Mapping the limbic system and the brain during orgasm; comparing treatment implications for different genders and for couples. Assessment of gender dysphoria, engaging a community of support for effective treatment. Acknowledging the sexual feelings of clients and therapists; setting wise and ethical limitations on behaviors.
